Decades of Glory

Bhavnagar Rotary Club was established in the year 1944 with a small group of elites of Bhavnagar with a noble motive of Community Service, like an oasis in the desert, by late Shri. Bhogibhai Sheth as president and late Shri. Bhagwatiprasad Mehta as Secretary of the Club.

In the initial period till date, the major role was involvement in the form of free Medical Service in the villages by organizingmedical camps in the various villages of the Bhavnagar district. This activity became more organised and effective during the period of 1963-64 to 1970 under the leadership os able Rotary presidents Rtn. Dr. Pravinbhai Oza, Rtn. Dr. l.B. Patwari, Rtn. Dr.R.P.Vyas, Rtn. Dr. Maheshbhai Trivedi, Rtn, Dr. R. M. Kamdar B Rtn. Shri Manikant V. Kothari.

In the decade of the period of 1971 to 1980, it was desired by the leaders of the Rotary Club of Bhavnagar to organise such medical aid to the comunity in a more organised way and it was contemplated to start a Rotary Service Centre and to render medical service in the form of a Diagnostic Center for diabetic, cardiac and general ailments. For this purpose, a piece of land at Gogha Circle was obtained from the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation through the efforts of Rtn. Jayantibhai J. Mehra. Sheth Shri. Jugaldasbhai Mody, originally of Bhavnagar District, and Industrialistof Bombay contributed generously for the developmeiit of the Rotary Service Center and the Bhavnagar Rotary Club possessed a beautiful monumental building of its own from where centralised and organised efforts for regular community Service conmmenced. Thus Rotary Service center came into existence in 1978 and is operating vigourously as a regular Rotary activity under the able. Continuous and sincere services by the old veteran Rtn. Dr. Indubhai B. Patwari. This project of Rotary Service Centre has found plase in the Library of Rotary International·as a; praise worthy nobel effort in the direction of the community service.

During the years from 1981-82 till date, fresh young blood got injected in the body politic of the club and Rotary age improved by reaching a new altitude and began functioning and expending its activities to new dimensions.

Our Rotary Club Presidents Rtn. Rameshbhai Viradia, Rtn. Dr. Himanshu Patwari, Rtn. Shri Dipakbhai P.Shah, Rtn. Shri Kiritbhai, Mehta. Rtn. Shri Sultan Ladiwala and many other active Rotarians contributed in making Rotary club as a live organisation and it penetrated in other fields of Community Service such as organising 1984 Mahotsav of Russian Ballet troop, Rotary Consumers Fair, Rotary Guide of Bhavnagar, Handicapped Project, Village Water Distribution Scheme, T.B. Diagnostict Camps., Polio Immunization Project, Construction of Sanitary Blocks in the villages for women, etc.

Rotary Club of Bhavnagar has always risen to meet the challanges of Cyclone and draught calamities in and around our district,

In 1989-90 Presidet Rtn. Pradeepbhai Gohil organised the ambitious Project of providing drinking water to 25 villages during the time of two years of severe draught in the district. This huma nitarian task was hailed as superb and noble since it satisfied the true Rotarians ideals. The District Governor, Rotary India Head Ouarters and Rotary International appreciated the club's efforts in this area.

There awaits a bright future for the Rotary Club of Bhavnagar as young turks are now saddled with accountability and responsibility at a Critical juncture when nation and societvatlarge have more expectations from the well-to-do section of the society. The present Society is facing challenges of over population, unemployment and health care problems such as prevention and treatment of dreaded Polio, T. B. drug addiction arid other allied diseases.

In the year 1989-90, PP Pradeep Gohil took the club to the new height. Besides, helping flood stricken villages, the club also extended regular water tank service to the famine stricken village, various Training Seminars, brood collective drive, tree-plantation, polio plus campaign, career guidance camp for the youth. Ouiz contests, Yoga classes, debating, polio corrective surgery, miedical camp, Road safety campaign, the buyers and sellers meet which stirred the town with Rotary spirit. Building sanitary toilet blocks for rural women became a major project. But the crown and glory was the '.Rotary Consumer Fair" visited by over on lac citizens.During this year, our club was declared twice as a club or the month by the then DG of our district. The receiving of matching grant of US $ 1500 from the foundation further boosted up our enthusiasm in 89-90. The year 90-91 continued the same hectic pace of multiple activities under the Presidentship of Rtn. Deepak Kothari. Drama projecf, Consumer fair, Social forestry, Rotary sports, Eye project, the ever first Fashion show, Children welfare and development programmes were undertaken seriously. Following the great tradition in 91-92. Rtn. PP Prof. P. N. Dholakia gave major thrust to drug deaddiction and functional literacy campaign. A regular drug deaddiction centre began with the consultancy of Rtn. Dr. Hasit Vaidya and round the year functional literacy classes were conducted for the ladies. Two teachers were appointed and self-earning crafts were also taught to them. Maximum fellowship and inter exchange was done during this year and the best of speakers hypnotised the club throughout the year, The present year, being our conference year, our team has double marched up. We have captainship of PP Rtn. Tarak Dholakia, initiated special library and toy bank for the slum area children andtoilet blocks for the rural area and adoption of home for leprosy patients. We look forward to every possible scope for humanitarian worle illustrating the Four-Way-Test that all our actions should be fair, true beneficiary to all and promoting fellowship in the society.
